OFTEN ONE POEM LEADS TO ANOTHER
WHERE SLEEP HAS GONE
Where has my sleep gone
once so peaceful; readily at hand
Now I finally drift off at 2 am
words comes to me at 5
demanding to be written down
Sleep, “Why do you delay
denying the solitude I seek?”
Who sends messages
disrupting my dreams
interfering with my waking?
Where has my sleep gone?
BENT GLASSES
I bent my glasses
this morning
falling asleep in them
after waking at 5 am
to write down
thoughts that woke me
Screaming in my head
to be heard
to be recognized
to be announced
to be shared with the universe
Before falling asleep again

Ms Shipley will be reading excerpts from her book, answering questions, and signing your book or you may purchase one at $8.95 on site.
Ms Shipley has worn many hats in her long career. She (and Cassandra) both majored in Interior Design at the American University. She has been a Model for such companies as Walmart, Wrangler, and Home Depot, being featured in an ad for Eli Lilly that ran for five years. She is most comfortable behind the scenes where she has been a producer and director for stage and film for a quarter of a century. She and her husband, Jack Peachum wrote, produced, and directed an independent film titled Vignette. They have co-authored works for both stage and screen. Ms Shipley has been a feature writer and columnist for two newspapers.
She is a regular attendant at First Friday Poetry Nights at the Warren FoodWorks
This is her first novel; Volume I in a series to follow.
A NEW SCENE FOR WRITERS
Over a period of ten years, I attended the Annual International Women Writers’ Conference of Remember the Magic at Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, New York. Each year I came away with writing ideas and guidance that had never entered my mind. I also attended A Writing Retreat weekends in Ohio where the same thing happened. I came home filled with enthusiasm and different approaches to writing.
Changing where you write is something that enhances your writing, gives a fresh new look to something you may have been working on for awhile. Writers need writers. It’s absolutely fulfilling to sit and talk with other writers. There is something about it, not quite like looking into a mirror but a sharing of struggle, accomplishment; of maybe sharing the same talent. An ending you’ve been scratching around for; some little pocket of information that has escaped you.
With that said, let me introduce you to an opportunity that may be just what you need:

This quote from one of my favorite poets
sits with truth on my lips, slides down to
my heart and nestles there, as it finds a home.
In love with language, words that tickle me,
making me laugh; sometimes outright giggle
words can impress me with their sincerity
depress me without any reason just because
they are a word that forms an unhappy picture.
Poets take these words and move them around
write one higher on the line to make it jump
or rest quietly to let you sigh, take a deep breath
be happy to see it, special words can be italic
to touch you, you will remember those words
so precious that they imprint on your mind
and stay there
Bards play with accents as in persona poems
where you use the voice of another, allowing
your words to come from their mouth or is it
their words from your pen, after stepping into
their shoes, testing their waters, feeling how
some one else thinks. Is that possible?
Or is it guesswork and misunderstanding.
Playing with words on paper is part of that
love of language; moving them around
forming an outline of a heart or a tree
simply for pure delight. The power of a
printed word in image, to impress another
or catch their eye while playing like a child
hoping to leave a mark on the reader.
WRITERS AS PROCRASTINATORS
Recently I read an article by Megan McArdle, written last year, on writers being the worst procrastinators. Her reasoning declared was, that we were at the top of our English classes in school, by natural talent, without trying.
I carry on her idea by saying, much to my regret now; I didn’t study like the smart kids did. I was a natural test taker, went over the material the night before and always passed with adequate marks. Sadly, one doesn’t actually learn this way, only gets good grades.
As a result, we wind up leaving our assignments to the last possible moments, when the words begin to finally flow. When we do this, we have no time to edit the article, to improve it, to turn in the perfect piece that editors would not have to scour for the errors we just zipped over, thinking that our content is enough. Shameful.
To go one step further, I found a way to ignore that blank sheet of paper staring back at me. I have several projects going at one time. When one of them gets stubborn; fights against me, I pop it off the computer, put it back into its own little document file and move on to another one that I have stashed away, just waiting. Of course, there is a drawback to this method, too. (There are always drawbacks to everything!) It means that projects seem to drag on, deadlines set by me, smudged over. It’ll be ready next week…..which falls into the following week, which…..
