16. skeltonic

There was a cat

who got so fat

and when he sat

his rump went flat

so he rolled over

into the clover

butterflies did hover

moved onto the rover.

17. the moon

The moon so big and bright

sometimes tho it is just a slice

then clouds come floating past

creating a dark, almost full mask

then passes on by to reveal to us

the moon hanging in the sky since dusk.

18. open the window

Let the breeze blow in

clear the dust, debrie,

and leftover whatevers

Write about a small habit you picked up from one of your parents.

In summer Mom closed –arlene s bice

open windows at 10 am

pulled heavy shades down

all the way to truly darken

later venetian blinds

needed drapes, also

to get the same darkening

I bought dark purple shears

to achieve the same

darkness

coolness

welcome on hot summer days.

Pandemic Ends! –arlene s bice

it is over

time to return

to your normal

but,  hopefully,

improved life

keep the good changes

stay in touch with people

from foreign lands you’ve met

and friendships formed anew

because of the coronavirus

that affected the entire world

alike.

write a poem using at least one word/concept/idea from each of two specialty dictionaries: Lempriere’s Classical Dictionary and the Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction.

Past and Future- arlene s bice

Recently another lost city was found

outside the Valley of the Kings in Egypt,

a city where lived mothers seeking marriage

for their daughters 3,000 years ago

just like in Jane Austen’s time 200 years ago

was there a story of marriage in Star Trek

or Star Wars or only spaceships beamed up

seeking places to inhabit, avoiding destruction

nowadays daughters make their decisions,

ignoring marriage if they prefer to live

life on their own without dismay.

write a two-part poem, in the form of an exchange of letters

Dear Jane Austen,
I’m writing to ask
what are your thoughts
on the devoted readers
you have today and the
spinoffs that came from
your original novels?
ASB

Dear Arlene,
I am as excited as all my
mothers marrying all their
daughters off, even the
less than wealthy ones
and love the wild spinoffs
born from  my wit.

Songs and Junk Drawers-arlene s bice

Singing in the rain

What a glorious feeling

Makes me happy again

Splashin’ in puddles

No more muddles

Just scootin’ along

An old phone book

No longer needed

A plastic hook

Once it was used

Come here and look

My lost notes are fused.

write a poem in the form of a “to-do list of an unusual person or character.

Jane Austen’s To Do List

by arlene s bice

time to write a letter

to sister Cassandra

place it in my reticule

along with my wee book (2”)

tiny mirror, change pocket,

handkerchief, and snuffbox;

send it through the Royal Mail

go to the apothecary for Mamma

take Queen cake to our ill neighbor

pick some violets from the meadow

visit the circulating library for a book

to read to the family after evening meal.

write a poem in monologue by someone who is dead, remembered from my childhood.

Mr. Servillo by arlene s bice

I was the vegetable & fruit man

pomodoro, peperone, melanzana, l’asparago

carota, spinaci, fungo, zucchina, carciofo

I grew most, carried to your door every week

fresh in season displayed in my open wagon

painted green, red wheels, colors of Italia

clop, clop, clop, down tarred streets of Trenton

drawn by my faithful horse, last one standing

cars and trucks slowed down, drove around me

lots of room in those days, sharing the roads

I was the last one rambling “verdure! frutta! qui!”
